At Highwoods Community Primary School, we use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme to give children a strong foundation in reading and writing. RWI is a structured phonics approach that teaches children how sounds are represented by letters and groups of letters, helping them to become confident and successful readers.

Reading regularly at home is one of the most valuable ways parents can support their child's learning. The more children read and share books, the more opportunities they have to practise and apply the phonics skills they learn in school. This regular practice helps to build fluency, confidence and accuracy, enabling children to recognise words more easily and develop a deeper understanding of what they read. As their reading skills grow, children are able to access a wider range of texts, broaden their vocabulary and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Through Read Write Inc., children learn to decode words quickly and accurately, allowing them to focus on understanding and enjoying their reading. They also develop the skills needed to spell confidently, helping them to express their ideas clearly and effectively in their writing.

When using RWI to read, the children will:

• learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.
• learn to read words using Fred Talk.
• read stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out.
• show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.

When using RWI to write, the children will:

• learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent 44 sounds.
• learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk.
• Writing simple sentences.
