Equality and Inclusion

Our most recent Ofsted (2019) reported that our school is fully inclusive. We are immensely proud of this.

As a school we have an ethos that is focused on equality, diversity and 'belonging'.

Mrs Costanzo is our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator. She can be contacted via senco@highwoodsprimary.com

Mrs Egerton is our English as an Additional Language Champion- her role is unique, and supports children and families who speak English as an Additional Language.

We have 2 Thrive trained practitioners who also support children with their social and emotional development.

At Highwoods, we invest significant resources into providing a safe, calm and nurturing environment which are accessible for all pupils. Examples of this include a purpose-built room dedicated especially for play therapy and counselling- this room is used daily by our qualified play therapist, counsellors from Child First and practitioners from outside providers such as Next Chapter and Mind. We have displays through the school which promote our values and ambition for all pupils to be the best that they can be. Children are excited and keen to learn about their peers, and treat each other with a deep-rooted mutual respect.

We strive to learn and develop in a community where all are equal and diversity in all of its forms is respected and celebrated.

To comply with recent legislation we have devised an Inclusion and Equality Policy with an Equality Action Plan and Accessibility Plan. These underpin the 3 objectives of the Public Sector Equality Duty within the Equality Act 2010.

We need to have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation a and other prohibited conduct
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people from different groups
  • Foster good relations between people from different groups

We will publish how we show compliance with the Equality Duty by publishing our Equality and Inclusion Plan on the school website.

All activities within the school are monitored to ensure that we show compliance with Equality Duty.
